The dog is only half the lesson
The Corso Institute is the education arm of CJ’s Dog Training. It exists because too many capable, well-meaning owners meet this breed for the first time after the behavior is already established.
Why this exists
A Cane Corso is a working guardian breed with mass, drive, and strong opinions about territory and family. Handled well, that dog is calm, neutral, and easy to live with. Handled by default, that same dog becomes a liability to the household and eventually to the breed’s reputation.
CJ has spent years working with owners who were told to wait it out, to be dominant, or to simply love the dog more. None of that scales to a 110-pound adolescent guardian. The Institute replaces that advice with an order of operations.
What we will never do
- We do not teach protection, guard, bite, or intimidation work.
- We do not recommend hitting, choking, hanging, alpha-rolling, pinning, or starving a dog.
- We do not tell an owner to ignore a bite or skip veterinary care.
- We do not use children to test whether training worked.
The standards behind each lesson
Walk before you overwhelm
Begin with controlled movement and shared direction before demanding social interaction.
Structure before freedom
Freedom is earned through safe, repeatable choices; it is not given faster than the dog can handle it.
Calm before affection
Reinforce the state of mind and behavior the household wants to live with.
Permission before access
Doors, furniture, greetings, food, and play follow clear household rules.
Neutrality before social excitement
A Corso does not need to greet every person or dog. Calm coexistence is the goal.
Prevention before correction
Stop unwanted behavior from being rehearsed while teaching the replacement.
Replacement before repetition
Name the behavior you want instead of repeatedly saying no.
Consistency from every person
The household uses the same cues, rules, release word, and response.
Progress before perfection
Track recovery, reliability, and better decisions — not a fantasy of never making mistakes.

Build value through walks, training, food, play, protection, and calm affection.
